Why do we measure cooling capacity in tons?
There’s a lot of history in the answer to that question, but the short answer is that a “ton” refers to the amount of heat it takes to melt one ton of ice in 24 hours. Invert that and a ton refers to how much heat can be removed from a building or structure. For heating and cooling applications, one ton equals 12,000 BTUs (British Thermal Units).

Water-cooled vs. Air-cooled Chiller
Water-cooled chillers require more equipment and are generally more time-consuming and costly to install and maintain. However, they are more efficient, so operating cost is less than air-cooled models.
For short-term rentals (three months or less), use an air-cooled system; for long-term arrangements, evaluate the use of a water-cooled unit.
If installation costs are a concern, opt for an air-cooled chiller; if the long-term cost of operation is more important, use a water-cooled system.

What makes an Air-Cooled Chiller System “Rental-Ready?”
TCRS portable chiller packages come complete with everything required for easy and quick connection to your facility. These units are specifically packaged for Rental and built to be easily shipped and installed for whatever your application requires. All TCRS temporary chiller rentals are outfitted with support frames to ensure safe transportation to and handling on the job site. Chillers are outfitted with Hydronic packages that include specifically sized pumps, triple duty valves, by-pass valves, strainers, and digital flow meters, which eliminates the guesswork of deciphering differential pressure. Our units all come complete with Cam-Lock cable connections for power and shore power connections for the heating elements to eliminate cold starting of the compressors. All of these engineered features are based on our 30+ years of experience in the temperature control rental business.

Air handlers can be coupled for unlimited tonnage capacity, so chiller/AHU systems are the better choice for larger applications. Air conditioning units are more efficient for smaller applications.
In sound-sensitive applications, use a chiller AHU system since they are quieter than AC units and the chiller can be located farther from the site.
If an application requires air temperatures cooler than 42°F (6°C), use a chiller/AHU, as typical air conditioning units are not designed to provide cooling below that range.
